Zodiac Seawolf Vintage Diver is a true legend of the dive watch family. From the triangular quarter hour markers to the metal split framed hands, the famous Zodiac symbol. From from the case, crown, & dial, its a very clean example in a world of very battered offerings.
Its very clean & serviced about 18 months back. Running perfectly on the timegrapher. The heritage associated with this Zodiac Sea Wolf one of the first dive watches doesnt have to cost you many thousands of dollars. That's what youll pay for the descendants of the Rolex Submariner or the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms which, in 1953 along with the Zodiac Sea Wolf helped introduce the world to the dive watch as we know it today.
This however is a much more affordable way to enjoy that history, with the venerable Zodiac Sea Wolf, introduced the very same year. Though there were dive watches in various forms before this year, its undoubtedly the rotating bezel that has become the dive watchs most iconic feature.
This more or less burst onto the scene in 1953 on the Rolex Submariner, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, and the Zodiac Sea Wolf.
According to Zodiac itself, the Sea Wolf was the first watch to feature the first 15 minutes of the hour highlighted on the bezel a nearly ubiquitous feature on dive watches today, including on those from Rolex and Blancpain.
A signature of the Zodiac Sea Wolf is that its unidirectional steel bezel has a 30-minute marker and no other numbers on the bezel, allowing it to be used to count up or down. The Sea Wolf dial is instantly recognizable with its bold triangle hour markers at 12, 3, 6, and 9, and unique lume filled triangle hands. This combination really gave the Zodiac a look like no other watch at the time, or even to this day for that matter.
The first generation Sea Wolf had triangle hands with only lume in them. Very soon after they switched to hands that had a line of metal through the middle of the hand, like the watch pictured here.
They came with either gloss black or white dial, and with a non-date and date option (called the Datographic). Unfortunately, the movement in the Datographic utilizes an offset cannon pinion that is prone to wear, and replacements are impossible to find. This weakness is not present in the non-date version, making the non-date much more desirable to collectors.
The good thing about this new movement was that is was thinner, and enabled the watch to be thinner as well. The original metal bezel version is a mere 7.5mm thick at the bezel, and just over 11mm including the highly domed crystal. At just under 35mm wide not including the oversized signed crown and with 17.4mm lugs, the Sea Wolf is downright svelte compared to other divers of the era.
The Zociac Sea Wolf would go on to gain popularity in the 1970s and become popular with US soldiers vintage models enjoy cult appreciation. In the dive watch history books its up there with the bigger more famous brands. Its distinctive dial and with Zodiacs rich history its already a classic.
